Southwest Presentation on a Pipe Shop Management System by Rick Ashcroft The Southwest Section meeting held on September 16, at Fiddler's Green had a presentation on a Pipe Shop Management System by Jeff Schaedig, Industrial Engineering Specialist at GD NASSCO. The objective of this project was to develop an automated planning and control system in the Pipe Shop that enabled the efficient handling of pipe spool fabrication in a flexible manufacturing environment. The solution to improved efficiency in Pipe Shop operations was to implement a pipe spool planning process that had the ability to apply defined rules for pipe part routing and nesting, but could accept late input changes to the work plans to accommodate emerging schedule changes and shop level loading requirements. This process would include a dynamic pipe nesting compo- The admiral spoke openly and informatively about the challenges facing the classification of ships where the time honored approach of designing to empirical formulas was giving way to the necessity of designing to first engineering principals and with complete analysis using the power of today's computing capability. The admiral also spoke of challenges facing the Maritime Industry and Technology where the engineering of larger and novel types of ocean going platforms, together with increasing environmental concerns, required new forms of review to be established. Admiral Kramek spoke of the economic impacts which forced the U.S. Navy to largely abandon its former MilSpec specifications and adapt commercial specifications. The admiral made a strong case to support the IMO (International Maritime Organization) standards.
