SECTION NEWS ARCTIC SECTION John W. Davies Memorial Award A "Thank you" letter from Dustin Isleifson to the Arctic Section follows: Dear Colin, I would once again like to thank you and the Arctic Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for choosing me as the recipient of the John W. Davies Memorial Award. I received your letter earlier this week and we had an "award ceremony" held in our antennas lab - a unique lab where I have done some of my design and verification work. In the attached picture, Dr. Lot Shafai (on the right, my thesis advisor) is presenting your letter to me (on the left). Unfortunately, my co-advisor Dr. David Barber was unable to be there since he is currently in the arctic as chief scientist aboard the CCGS Amundsen. I have chosen to send you an e-mail letter so that you can have an electronic copy of the picture. Once again, thank you for this scholarship. And certainly, in the future I will look to see if I can present at one of your meetings. by Ben Seligman The winner of the Arctic Section's John W.Davies Memorial Award is Dustin Isleifson, a post-grad student at the Dept of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Canada. The photo shows Dustin Isleifson, the winner of the award, being presented with the award letter by his thesis advisor, Dr. Lot Shafai. The award was made to Dustin for his on-going research on developing and improving upon the description of the interaction of electromagnetic waves in sea ice. Quoting from Dustin's research description: "The end goal of my research is to obtain an electromagnetic or scattering model which improves the description of the arctic sea ice system. This model will be used by researchers in current and future research programs related to arctic studies, especially concerning the effects of global warming on sea ice expanse and its progressive reduction. Its use in conjunction with scatterometer measurements, will provide an important calibration tool for interpretation of satellite remote sensing data." Kindest regards, Dustin Dustin Isleifson (left) with his thesis advisor, Dr. Lot Shafai 6 SNAME NEWS
