University of Michigan by Kate Novinc The University of Michigan SNAME Student Section, otherwise known as Quarterdeck, has been extremely involved in activities associated with our professional society and the University this semester. Due to the generosity of alumni and faculty, seventeen students attended the SNAME Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale from October 11th to the 14th. At the conference students were able to attend technical presentations, alumni networking events, and participate in student activities with students from other student sections. The trip was concluded with a tour of the Miami Coast Guard Maintenance facilities, orchestrated by Jeff Payne, a graduate student at the University of Michigan, who works at this facility. This was an amazing opportunity to have hands-on experience and actually see the application of what is taught in the classroom. Another phenomenal opportunity for our department to contribute to SNAME occurred when Dr. Roger Compton, the past President of SNAME, visited our campus on October 27th. With this visit he accomplished his goal of visiting every student section during his term as SNAME President. After touring our facilities he received feedback from students on ways SNAME could further reach out to students and therefore improve in the future. In addition to SNAME involvement, our student section recently contributed to an event called "Tech Day," which is hosted by the College of Engineering. Tech Day is an opportunity for high school students and their parents to tour the College, and learn about the engineering departments and student organizations. During the exhibit portion of Tech Day students presented a stability model, "Sink or Float" game, pictures of students during their internships, two model hulls from the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory, footage of USCG model hull testing and the christening of the LCS. NA&ME students also gave a speech to high school students informing them of the extensive opportunities in the marine industry, to encourage future Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
