John Nieboer started his career at the Jongert shipyard in the Netherlands, and was involved in the design of lux- ury sailing yachts between 20-40 m, from preliminary design to detailed fabrication drawings, including the sailing performance and the integra- tion of special gadgets into the design. After eight years, he made a switch to the High Speeds Craft department at Damen Shipyards, where he designs commercial high-speed craft such as SPa 4207, a 42 m fast patrol craft based on the Enlarged Ship Concept. is experience has enabled Nieboer to innovate and to incor- porate many disciplines into one design. John Scarano has been presi- dent and co-owner of Scarano Boatbuilding Inc. (SBI) since 1976. He is designer of record of 9 sail and 17 power vessels for the United States Coast Guard- certicated passenger vessel trade, which all are currently in that service. Such vessels include designs in wood, steel, aluminum, and composite materials. His activities at SBI also include design of small sailing craft and various vessel modications. Scarano has been a mem- ber of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers since 1995. Christine Schleicher is an employee of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, Combatant Craft Division. Her work involves a broad range of projects related to research, development, design, con- struction, and testing of combatant craft for the United States Navy. She holds a bachelor of science degree in naval archi- tecture and marine engineering from Webb Institute, and a master of science degree in engineering mechanics from Old Dominion University.
