www.sname.org/sname/mt April 2013 AERO-HYDRO INTEGRATION REFINING YACHT DESIGN WITH CUSTOMIZED AERODYNAMIC COEFFICIENTS Yacht design and the competitiveness of racing sailors have driv en the development of specialized tools for the integrated desi gn and analysis of the many components of a modern racing yacht. In the past, hydrodynamic data (hull and appendage) and aerodynamic data (sails and rig) of racing yachts development were completed in isolation from one another. In generic terms, the rig/sails of a yacht were modeled with very simplistic aero methods while the hull and appendages were modeled with very simplistic models of the hydro system. is process worked well for many years.
