January 2013 www.sname.org/sname/mt The Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway Integrated Master Program In the Scandinavian countries, master of science programs in marine technology are oered at Aalto University in Helsinki; Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg; Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby; the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim; the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm; the University of Stavanger; and Aalborg University. Most Nordic programs are directed towards naval architecture. Some oer courses in ocean engineering, often with a civil engineering avor. ose in Trondheim reect the broad cluster of industries in Norway and oer education in naval architecture and marine engineer- ing, oshore engineering, aquaculture technology, and renewable oshore energy. When the university in Trondheim was established in 1910, naval architecture was included as a discipline. is was no surprise: Two of the prime ministers of Norway in the early 1900s were shipowners. Later, with the introduc- tion of the motor ship, marine engineering required more attention. Education in sheries technology was introduced in the 1970s. Also, the emerging oil and gas industry in the early 1970s led to a demand for new competence, and new courses were introduced to meet those needs. In recent years, the need for marine technology in connection with aquaculture, operations in arctic environments, and the emerging oshore wind industry has led to development of novel study specialities. e importance of marine technol- ogy has made this a highly prioritized area in Norway and at NTNU. Additionally, cooperation with the research institute MARINTEK in SINTEF, both with respect to personnel and laboratory infrastructure in the Marine Technology Centre in Trondheim, provides a unique environment for research and research-based teaching and learning with the ultimate goal being to contribute to an economic and sustainable use of the oceans.
