This highly repetitive type of installation requires a very dierent approach from that of the oil and gas industry. As an example, consider the number of lifts in a single installation: lifts of small equipment items, lifts of instal- lation apparatus, and lifts of personnel. ese represent many lifts, mostly of rela- tively low weight. en consider a monopile and transition piece installation for an o- shore wind turbine foundation. Because the operation is repetitive, many of the small items are arranged to remain in lift- ing hooks. e large items (between 350-800 tons for a monopile and 150-450 tons for a transition piece) require very careful plan- ning to ensure that the objects are handled in a controlled manner both in ideal weather conditions as well as in those on the limit.? Varying WWs Weather window (WW) availability requires careful planning as well. For just how much of each month during the year will the required weather window be available? It is likely that there will be WWs of various durations and wave heights. Planning for when these occur, both in sequence and in severity of limiting conditions, will have a key impact on the duration of the project. For example, think of a cable laying pro- gram for a typical oshore wind farm. Will all of the cables be the same length and type, and will they all lay easily? Some will likely require a longer installation time depending on whether they are cut lengths o of a reel. ere will most likely be a reduction in time required after the initial 8 to 12 cables are laid; how much is that likely to be?
