MERCIER: Yes. Its [roughly] doubling the size of the eet every 5 years. KELLY: The TLP project you were just talking about with Hutton and Conoco Inc., that was completed in 1982? MERCIER: In 1984. And the second one was in 1989, also by Conoco. KELLY: at seems a big gap, with four or ve years before the second one went in. MERCIER: I think there are two consid- erations here. One is, do we really know enough about how to design these things and do we have enough people available to be able to do this? e other is, have we really got enough assets, oil elds in deep water, that merit being developed, to go to the trou- ble of investing in this technology? In the late 1980s, that wasnt perfectly clear. So, proving the technology was step one. [Another key step was] nding the elds to apply the technology. Once the explorers looked seriously in ultra-deep water, I think they were surprised at how much they found. Without that, the technology development would not have progressed. KELLY: Jack, Im told youve been a very active SNAME member for a number of years. Can you share with us what youve gotten out of membership with SNAME, and tell me also about your winning the Blakely-Smith award. MERCIER: What I like about SNAME is the chance to stand around and shoot the breeze with guys who know about the same kind of stu that Im interested in.
