ASSET-Submarine provides a concept design capability for sub -marines. It creates a 3D solid model of a submarine from which all of the hydrostatics are calculated. ASSET-Submarine features robust weight estimation and powering prediction capabilities. e latest ver -sion features propulsor design and component placement capabilities. e submarine product model produced is analysis ready. e Rapid Ship Design Environment (RSDE) is designed to be the executive that runs LEAPS-based ship design genera -tion and analysis tools. e current version of RSDE performs design space exploration by executing ASSET-Ship hundreds of times, generating hundreds of ship concepts that are populated back to the LEAPS database. is tool includes the capability of ASSET parameter selection, design space sampling method selection, and execution engine. e user can choose between a Latin Hypercube design space sampling method, or user-dened design points. In future versions of RSDE, the software will pro -vide the capability to batch execute the other tools in the LEAPS suite, provide robust design space visualization capability, and perform multidisciplinary design optimization. e long-term vision for RSDE is more complex than a mere execution engine. e future software development eort of RSDE will address the question of how each tool ts into the complete ship design process. Issues such as what information is available in time for each analysis and what assumptions can be made will be carefully considered, because the way that design tools interact is directly related to the way we design ships. e real challenge for RSDE is to move the navy design community from a point-based design mindset to a set-based design methodology that uses a design space synthesis. is design space must include physics-based anal -ysis for the critical design areas that need to be addressed early in the design process during initial ship sizing, requirements deni -tion, and initial program budget development.
