January 2012 www.sname.org/sname/mt VESSEL REPO þÿ rRT: TRIDECK SUPERYACHT VESSEL REPORT Trinity Yachts hull 047, Carpe Diem , is the second yacht in a series featuring a new semi-displacement hull form. is was developed to oer Trinity cus- tomers a hull with a beam larger than 8.5 m while retaining the shallow draft and speeds greater than 20 knots. e program has presented its share of challenges. In 2003, we began looking to design a vessel for a specic customer, an initiative driven in part by input from owners. We wanted something more exible for the future, and we wanted to go over the 500 gross ton mark?preferably to a number high enough that it was worthwhile to go there, as the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requirements are invoked above 500 gross tons. We didn?t want to land at 501, because once you cross the threshold, you might as well go large enough to incor- porate all the amenities an owner may desire for this size yacht. We decided on a 32-ft. (10.21 m) beam hull, and found that we wanted to investigate several hull forms. We had an outside group give us two dierent designs, one being a hard chine vessel and one being a rolled-bilge vessel. We had our own opinion about it but wanted to verify it with model testing. The designs were taken to a model basin, where they were tested at various displacements and speeds; we went up to 30 knots during the test phase. e client wanted water jets, so the hull transom was designed and tested for submerged jet application. New opportunity Unfortunately, that project died and a year went by. Still, we wanted a new hull. We then got an opportunity with another customer for a larger yacht and decided to use the results from the earlier design in developing the new hull. e more ecient rolled-bilge hull at 32-ft. molded beam (measured inside the hull) was developed for this customer. He wanted propellers instead of jets, so we redesigned it for wheels. We did that ourselves without additional model testing. We were able to do some unique things in develop- ing the lines.
