July 2011 www.sname.org/sname/mt The Cochrane Award, rst presented in 1946 in honor of Vice Admiral E.L. Cochrane, has undergone changes to reect the changing nature of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Previously chosen as the best paper published in Marine Technology ? by the Marine Technology Committee, the award will now honor the best peer-reviewed paper published by the society from conferences, symposia, fea- tured papers,? and non ship production? papers of the Journal of Ship Production and Design . Note that ship production papers are considered for the Elmer L. Hann Award. e change in the award developed following the redesign of SNAMEs membership magazine, Marine Technology . No longer a peer reviewed journal, Marine Technology , or (mt) as it is now called, has developed into a leading technology magazine with articles written by subject area experts. e magazine has become a vehicle for peer-to-peer communication focused on up-to-the- minute developments in every facet of the maritime industry. The Featured Paper Committee will now recommend one Cochrane Award paper and two honorable mentions to the Awards Committee. Their choices will be based on their evaluation of the subject, originality, and technical quality of the papers. Once approved by the Awards Committee, the author of the winning paper will be presented with The Vice Admiral E.L. Cochrane Award medallion during the Annual Meeting at a suitable ceremony decided upon by the president.
